WriteClub Aphorism Contest Winners:

staffnote: (fixed formatting) The challenge was to write an aphorism we might embrace on our deathbeds. Death has a way of silencing us, the imponderable often does. What I find interesting is that writings on death often contain more thoughts on life. To be at peace with death is to be at peace with living.

The submissions are phenomenal. These are my favorite top 10 as well as the 3 that stood out most for me.


First place is Darcie’s ( amphigorical ) submission that is pure aphorism. Nietzsche would have been proud. A beautiful concept put to a beautiful metaphor. She does in two sentences what would take most twenty.


Second place is last weeks gold winner, shadowofyourlight. He likes to play with dualities, loading up concepts in experiential trojan horses. I sometimes do not fully understand the idea he’s putting forth in the first read - although I feel quite emotionally affected. His writing requires a reading between the lines - in whats being suggested, as he states “everything between, just noise”.


Third place is Eve (curseofthe-consultingdetective) from Germany. In a lax colorful tone she drops an existential quandary. The event horizon of death - that moment we slip, where there can be no clinging because there is nothing to cling. Death is the only time we no longer mentally picture ourselves in the future… we become retrospective selves… a self bound no longer by a future, but a ‘have i been’.


You’ve all implanted some beautiful ideas in my mind and others. Thanks for participating, I can’t wait until the next challenge. And I’m so impressed by everyones submissions and how hard it was to rate these (however subjective!) that I’m going to highlight this post as well as the winner(amphigorical).

To look forward on the edge of death would be to invite the imbalance that would send you over the precipice; instead look back to solid ground and find comfort in the familiar. Let your fear ground you by refusing to dwell on it—advance only when calm has built a bridge where you otherwise might have plummeted.

Life goes on, then it doesn’t. Everything in between, just noise. Pound on your neighbor’s floor, or grab your lover and dance. Just don’t be like me, don’t lie in sound proof boxes, don’t tune it out.

“To be or not to be?” is not the question anymore. It’s more like “Have I been or haven’t I been?”. But as cold fingers pull me into a sweet, delicate nothingness, it becomes irrelevant. I may have been, but who can really tell until you stop “being”?

If I were to die, I would be struck by lightning. There would be no time for fear, regrets or self pity. Simply an explosion of feeling with enough time for one last laugh.

I would die as I have lived, in a blaze of tears and laughter. With my head and hat held high.

Death cares not for half-truths and excuses.

And I refuse to lie on my deathbed.
